Career Development for Youth

Tim Aldinger, Youth Program Officer at The Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board (TRWIB) oversees the funding process of youth workforce development programs in Allegheny County, PA. The goal of this funding is to help youth ages 14–24 develop the interests, skills, and experience necessary to become productive members of the workforce. As part of the organization’s annual planning process, Tim used the Information Commons to conduct a needs analysis of the region.

Using programmatic and demographic data from the Information Commons, Tim
created a series of maps that identified the locations of current workforce
investment programs and how well they are positioned to meet the needs
of the neighborhoods with the largest populations of low-income youth.
As a result of the study, the Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board can proactively stimulate the development of new workforce investment programs in areas where they are needed most.

Tim worked in partnership with local non-profit, 3rc, using Rhiza’s Community Catalog to identify the neighborhoods most in need of workforce investment funding. 3rc is a regional partner of the Information Commons in Southwestern PA and manages multiple Community Catalog websites about human services and after-school programs in the region.
